We spent three nights in this lovely family run Inn, hosted by a husband and wife team.
Very well situated in a quiet part of Meredith, two minutes drive from... read more all the restaurants and amenities of this pretty lakeside town. Luckily we had a car, as we were in the middle of our "Fall" road trip. The Inn is positioned quite a way up a hill, which we would have found difficult, but then we ARE wrinklies!
We had a very comfortable and tastefully furnished large room (5, Loon Island) with excellent ensuite facilities and even with its own small ante room along with sofa. Windows on two sides and very good wardrobe and dressers. Very comfortable bed.
The 3 course breakfasts were superb, very imaginative and beautifully cooked by our Opera singer hostess, Ann-Marie. And tom had baked some delicious Banana bread. There was French toast, Premium grade maple syrup and sausage, orange juice, coffee and tea etc. Another was Banana, strawberries and granola/blueberry muffins/maple sausage with scrambled egg. The menus were beautifully chalked up on a slate board in the dining room. Anne-Marie's husband, Tom, looked after us at breakfast and gave us many suggestions about where to go in Meredith. One of his recommendations was "Castle in the Clouds", about a fifteen minute drive away. And so- off we went. This private mansion was a real joy with amazing views of the valley and lakes below it. Lots of family history, as we were guided around this glorious mansion, once owned by a billionaire Shoe manufacturer. This is a must if you stay in Meredith. Sadly we weren't able to get onto the scenic railway, which was fully booked and the Mount Washington Steamboat had stopped running for the winter.
Another attraction was the Natural Science Centre, six miles away in Holderness, which was open. It was beautifully set out and landscaped with lots of rescued birds and animals. Even an aquarium. There was also a fairly steep hike through the woods to the top of Mount Fyall, 1000 feet up, which offered great views of Lake Squam. The return walk down to the Centre was much easier and much more gradual. Lots of lovely little chipmunks everywhere. Worth the climb for the amazing view. And there is a most welcome bench at the top for weary "mountaineers/hikers".
We wished we had longer to explore Meredith and Lake Winnepesaukee.
This is a great place to stay in Meredith. To sum up- very comfortable, excellent breakfasts and lovely hosts/Inn Keepers.Michael M
